Chris Whitley (1960-2005) was a Texas born song writer, guitarist, singer with modest commercial success, but was an icon to fellow musicians and devoted fans. His style came up from roots music from the Delta, peppered with modern and progressive influnces, his playing was unique, passionate, rock n’ roll to the core. His influence has reached far to include Dave Matthews, Bruce Springteen, Don Henly and many others.
Rolling Stone said, “The post-Hendrix explosion of whammybar wankers hasn’t produced a single axeman who can compare to Chris Whitley. His eerie, bluesy voice and American gothic tunes frequently draw attention from the fact that he picks like a pissed off Doc Watson jacked through a Marshall stack.”
Living With The Law and Dirt Floor are regarded as classics, but you can’t take your ears off anything that made it to the silver disk. For the rock n’ roll fan, the rock n’ roll muscian, Chris Whitley shouldn’t be missed.
Whitley passed on to the next world in November of 2005 after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was “a dirty guitar player” that made you soul come alive.
